Why Rio Ngumoha Cannot Play at the 2026 World Cup
Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha impressed on his senior England debut during a 1-0 victory over New Zealand in a pre-World Cup friendly. However, despite his promising performance, the 17-year-old will not be eligible to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
FIFA regulations state that any player selected for the final World Cup squad must have been included in the country’s provisional squad list submitted before the tournament. England manager Thomas Tuchel submitted a provisional list of 55 players, but Ngumoha was reportedly not among those names.
As a result, even if injuries affect England’s squad before their opening match against Croatia, the Liverpool winger cannot be called up as a replacement.
Although missing out on this year’s tournament is disappointing, Ngumoha remains one of England’s brightest young talents. With his rapid development and the support of Liverpool’s new head coach Andoni Iraola, he is expected to have many more opportunities to represent his country in major competitions in the future.
For Liverpool, the youngster’s absence from the World Cup could allow him to rest, continue his development, and prepare fully for the upcoming club season.
